An Overview of the Volta Region

The Volta Region of Ghana is the most easterly region of the country.  With a diverse tropical climate ranging from exotic rain forests to the arid Savannah of the north, this region is treasured for its immense beauty.  HoHoe, with a population of about 55,000, is the second largest town in this region.  Located here are both the highest mountain and the tallest waterfall in all of Ghana, (as well as a monkey sanctuary!) therefore tourism is one of the main economic activities, along with farming, fishing, and animal rearing.  I will be placed in one of the villages surrounding this district for the majority of my volunteer work.  Although I have never traveled to this part of the world, I have heard wonderful things in particular about the warmth of the people who live in this area.  One specifically said, "the hospitality of the Ghanaian people and their vibrant culture are the hallmarks of this former British colony." - Bradt Guide, Ghana.  I am excited to learn more about the customs and culture of this country as I continue to prepare for this adventure, and will continue to share what I find!
